Program Name:KEMBARA KASIH A JOURNEY OF LOVE
Country/Territory:Singapore
Duration:48(min)×9(Episode)

  • Introduction
Kembara Kasih is much more than just a conventional travelogue. The series takes us on an experiential journey through the daily lives of slum dwellers. Through the portrayal of life among the destitute, we gain insight on social issues such as the lack of emphasis on education and unsanitary living conditions. All over the world, these impoverished communities have also been misunderstood, discriminated against, and neglected by society for far too long. Our host, Dalina, and her fellow volunteers commence their journey of love to the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam. The grim realities of poverty-stricken lives will move us to tears. But beyond merely observing their living conditions often described as unfit for human habitation, our host showcases the spirit of volunteerism by educating the less fortunate with a livelihood skill. As we become witnesses to social injustices and concerns, Kembara Kasih hopes to move the audience to act and show support for these communities.Kembara Kasih Episode Payatas 4 September 2015 No Video Audio PRE TITLE VO Dalina Ekspidisi Kembara Kasih membawa saya ke Manila sekali lagi. Eh that time you cakap yang you punya volunteer work first time dekat luar negeri? [English Subtitles] There's so many challenges! If I were to tell each and every one of them, I wouldn't even finish talking for ten days. You just have to persevere. Wow, the hotel looks nice, right? They're doing the keys right? That time you were saying that you are volunteering for the first time overseas? UPSOT Hidayah Yes, correct overseas. [English Subtitles] Yes, correct overseas. UPSOT Dalina Abeh kat Singapore punya? Kalau dorang dedicate lapan jam sebulan, nanti Mendaki kasih dorang duit jajan lah. Duit jajan ni dapat tolong dorang punya duit macam belanja seharian, duit tambang bas, macam gitu lah. [English Subtitles] I'm involved in ASP program that is organised by Mendaki. It's called adult learning/coaching program. It's where I become a mentor to two ITE students, helping them in their daily lives and academics. If they dedicate eight hours a month, Mendaki will give them pocket money which would help them with their daily expenses like transport. 2 Intro to Manila’s poor VO Dalina Jumlah penghuni kawasan setinggan amat tinggi di benua Asia. [English Subtitles] Asia has the highest concentration of slum dwellers. About 20 million people live in slums in the Philippines and one tenth of these slum dwellers live in the capital Manila. Urbanization attracted people to move to the city in hopes of landing better jobs. But rural to urban migrants often fall behind in the hectic city life. Many end up living in vast dumpsites. Their children may not be able to attend school. Most make a living by scavenging through trash. [English Subtitles] Payatas is one of the poorest parts of the Philippine capital. Almost 40% of the active population unemployed. Nearly half the residents earning less than 4,000 Philippine pesos ($100) a month, according to the Payatas Poverty Alleviation Foundation (PPAF). 4 VO Dalina Mereka mengumpul sampah-sarap dan alat-alat yang boleh dikitar semula dari kawasan perumahan mereka, lalu mereka jualnya kepada kedai-kedai. [English Subtitles] They collect trash and items that can be recycled from their neighbourhood and sell them to junk shops. The income they earned is used to support themselves. Any additional income is spent on their family. 5 Dalina introducing Payatas to Hidayah Intro that Payatas is a dumpsite UPSOT Dalina Hidayah, inilah Payatas kalau nak tahu. Abeh kan… orang-orang…penduduk kat sini kebanyakan kerja mereka memungut sampah. [English Subtitles] Hidayah, so this is Payatas. Most of the people here work in the dumps. UPSOT Hidayah Memungut sampah? Budak-budak pun sama juga? [English Subtitles] Dumps? The children here as well? UPSOT Dalina Ah budak-budak. [English Subtitles] Yes. From young until they become adults, they collect trash everyday. That's where they get their income. UPSOT Hidayah That’s why there’s a saying: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. UPSOT Dalina Mmm, macam tu lah. Kita tengok apa dorang buat ni. Eh… what are you playing? Hello! [English Subtitles] Oh, I see. Let's see what they're doing here. [English Subtitles] This time in Manila, Hidayah and I will meet a girl by the name of Jessica. Jessica is a 9-year-old girl who has been brought up in Payatas. She lives with her parents and they work as trash collectors. She was recently taken out of school because her mother could not afford to pay for her education. Every night she collects trash at the dumpsite with her family. The valuable items they collect will be sold to the owner of the garbage bin. And if they are lucky, there would be pag-pag among the trash. [English Subtitles] Every morning, Jessica will go to the river to wash the plastic bags that she picked up to sell. She can clean up to 50 pieces of plastic bags in a day. Although Jessica has to soak her feet and arms in the dirty river to wash the plastic bags, she considers it a blessing. Jessica considers this as something normal as it is a way for her and her family to earn a living. 8 VO Dalina Pekerjaan Jessica tidak begitu rumit. Namun, adakalanya dia tercedera. [English Subtitles] Her job is not complicated but nevertheless, she gets injured sometimes. 9 SOT Jessica (Tagalog) [English Subtitle] : My finger got injured when I was hanging plastic. [English Subtitles] We are curious to see the way of life here in Payatas. It’s a good thing Jessica agreed to take us to her home. [English Subtitles] Hidayah and I did not expect the environment to seem clean and not smelling bad. 12 UPSOT Dalina Ni kalau I jalan sorang-sorang sesat ni. [English Subtitles] If I were walking here alone I would definitely get lost. [English Subtitles] After going through the maze of houses, we reached Jessica’s home. 14 UPSOT Jessica [English Subtitles] This is Dalina and this is Hidayah. UPSOT Dalina Hello! My name is Dalina UPSOT Hidayah Hidayah. UPSOT Jenalyn Jenalyn. UPSOT Hidayah How are you? Cook already? [English Subtitles] A month ago, Jessica’s house burnt down as a result of a fire that spread from the kitchen. Since then, they have rebuilt their home with pieces of wood that they found. [English Subtitles] The house looks more like a garage or workshop than a home. The condition is bad and the size of the house is small. When it rains, everything will get wet because the roof is leaking. 17 UPSOT Dalina Jessica, are those collected by you? Can show us? 18 VO Dalina Saya dan Hidayah diajak ke tempat pembuangan sampah malam nanti. [English Subtitles] Hidayah and I were invited to the dumpsite later that night. But before that, we are given a crash course to know what the types of trash to look for are. 19 UPSOT Dalina Okay dia macam-macam harga. [English Subtitles] The prices differ. Among these, this mug is the most valuable. It costs 2 Pesos. This bottle cost half a peso. UPSOT Hidayah Yang ni pula kalau dikumpul satu kilo, kurang daripada sepuluh sen Singapura. [English Subtitles] These cans here are sold for less than 10 cents a kilo. UPSOT Dalina Satu kilo eh. [English Subtitles] One kilo? UPSOT Hidayah Satu kilo berapa banyak tu nak kene kumpul? [English Subtitles] Just imagine how much needs to be collected. [English Subtitles] That’s why this mug is the most valuable. UPSOT Hidayah Itu yang kita kene cari. [English Subtitles] This is the item that we need to find. 20 VO Dalina Setelah mendapat tahu tentang kutipan mereka, saya dan Hidayah sempat bersembang dengan ibu Jessica. [English Subtitles] After finding out a little about their collection, Hidayah and I chatted with Jessica’s mom. 21 UPSOT Dalina Okay so how many people staying here? UPSOT Jenalyn [Tagalog] [English Subtitles] Four. Me, my husband, my children... I haven't seen my other daughter who lives in the province for four years now. I want to see her. We're separated for 4 years..... I also want to see my other daughter. She is already married now. Her husband beats her. I want to see her, I miss her... I want to get her away from her husband but I don't have money, I cannot afford to take her... That's why I work here at the dumpsite. I want my family be complete. [English Subtitles] We felt heartbroken when Jessica’s mom told us about her life. One of her daughters, Ronalyn, was married off at a young age. Now 17 and expecting her second child, she lives with her husband who physically abuses her. Due to poverty, she had to live apart from her daughter Andrea who has been sent to relatives’ in a different province. We found out that it’s a common practice for the poor to send their children away. Even if we cannot help the other families, we made a vow to reunite Jessica’s family. At least they could meet after 4 years. 23 UPSOT Dalina We try to find your two daughters. Bien, can you get their details? We'll try to find okay? Good! [English Subtitles] We engaged the help of Bien, a fellow volunteer to do so. At least they could meet after 4 years, even if it is only for awhile. Teaser UPSOT Hidayah Mata kirinya sudah buta, dia punya pelajaran terjejas. [English Subtitles] His left eye has become blind, his studies have slackened. I tak tahu macam mana I boleh tahan tapi I akan cuba. [English Subtitles] I don’t know how I will manage it but I will try. ACT 2 25 Recap Payatas as a dumpsite VO Dalina Payatas adalah sebuah kawasan pembuangan sampah di mana ramai telah membina kehidupan sebagai pemungut sampah di sini. [English Subtitles] Payatas is a slum area where many of the residents have built lives as trash collectors. [English Subtitles] The residents of Payatas live in squalid conditions, where they should prioritize their health. But they cannot afford to do so. Their monthly income is only about S$100. They cannot afford the cost to travel to a clinic. [English Subtitles] Today, we join a group of volunteers who are conducting free eye screenings for the residents here. 28 VO Dalina Saya ditugaskan menjadi assistant Dr Jay, manakala Hidayah menjadi pembantu Dr Roque. [English Subtitles] I was assigned to be Dr Jay’s assistant while Hidayah assisted Dr Roque. [English Subtitles] Volunteer doctors from St Luke’s Medical Centre does health check ups for free to the poor communities around the Philippines. 30 VO Dalina Sementara Hidayah membantu Dr. Roque menangani kes-kes kanak-kanak, saya membantu Dr. Jay melakukan pemeriksaan mata untuk warga emas dan mengagih-agihkan cermin mata membaca kepada mereka yang memerlukan. [English Subtitles] While Hidayah is helping Dr Roque handle pediatric cases, I assist Dr Jay with the screening of the elderly and distributing reading glasses to those who need it. 31 UPSOT Dr Jay So he went from 20/7 to 20/20, that’s when he wears the glasses. UPSOT Dalina So, it's suitable? UPSOT Dr Jay Yes, it’s suitable. Jadi sukses. This is for you. [English Subtitles] Finally, there's someone who is suited to wear prescription glasses. Success. [English Subtitles] According to the doctors, sometimes they receive patients only after the illness has reached the late stage, when in fact it could have been prevented or cured if treatment was sought earlier. [English Subtitles] Unfortunately the doctors cannot save everyone. 35 SOT Hidayah Daniel sebenarnya pelajar cemerlang. [English Subtitles] Daniel is an excellent student. He gets first position in class but since his left eye has become blind, his studies have slackened. Even if he goes through surgery now, it’s too late. If only we knew earlier, perhaps his eyes could have been saved. 36 UPSOT Dr Roque Even if we do a surgery to correct the wall eye, to straighten out the eye, it might just go… drift away again because it’s not functioning. [English Subtitles] Even though some like Daniel are receiving bad news about the health of their eyes for the first time today, there is still hope for others 38 UPSOT Dr Roque When we examined the eyes, he has cataracts. There are white opacities. He’s turning 4 and at this age the cataract has to be taken out. [English Subtitles] This child needs to undergo surgery because he has cataract. So if he doesn’t get it operated, he will not be able to see. There is no development in his sight. [English Subtitles] Slums like this is often associated with squalid living conditions. In addition, overcrowding encourages the spread of diseases. 41 SOT Dr. Marianne Roque Basically what we noticed here, there are issues with sanitation that’s why there are a lot of children having eye infections. Also we have one case with congenital cataracts. It was caused when the mother developed an infection during the time she was pregnant which caused the cataracts to form. [English Subtitles] Due to poverty, slum dwellers do not prioritize their health. Many cannot afford the cost of treatment. UPSOT Dr. Roque When he was young, his eye get infected …. [English Subtitles] With such health screenings, the residents here are at least able to make appointments with doctors if needed. [English Subtitles] The doctors also relayed information about free treatments offered at the hospital for the needy. [English Subtitles] After completing our tasks, Hidayah and I distributed buns to the residents that attended the eye screening. We also reminded them to make lenses for the spectacles that they received. [English Subtitles] That night, we returned to Payatas to help Jessica’s family look for treasures among trash that they can sell 46 UPSOT Dalina Okay so you are going to work? Where? 47 VO Dalina Hidup pemungut sampah amat merbahaya. [English Subtitles] The life of a trash collector can be dangerous. The mountains of trash pose a risk of landslides that have killed hundreds of residents a few years ago. Since then the residents of Payatas are no longer allowed into the dumpsite. But the ban was only temporary because trash is a source of income for them here. To handle the situation, the authorities have built shacks like these to segregate the trash into smaller portions. 48 UPSOT Dalina Is this where you work? Inside this one? [English Subtitles] This shack is solely for Jessica’s family. I wonder how it looks like on the inside. 50 UPSOT Jessica in Tagalog UPSOT Dalina Okay I dengar perkataan “truck”. [English Subtitles] I heard the word “truck”. Bien, what did she say? UPSOT Sherbien Later the garbage truck will be arriving here. UPSOT Dalina Later? So this is not it? UPSOT Hidayah I tak tahu macam mana I boleh tahan tapi I akan cuba. [English Subtitles] I don’t know how I will manage it but I will try. UPSOT Dalina Dah tak terkata. Anda bayangkan ni truck belum sampai lagi dia punya bau dah macam gini. Kita tak tahu bahawa truck belum sampai. Ingatkan ini lah dia. [English Subtitles] I have no words. Can you imagine? The truck is not here yet but the smell is already bad. We didn’t know that the truck is not here yet. I thought this was it. SOT Hidayah Ini semua sisa-sisa daripada hari-hari lain eh. [English Subtitles] This is the remnants from the previous days. SOT Dalina I think so la. Sekejap lagi fresh from the oven. [English Subtitles] We will get the fresh ones in a while. 51 SOT Dalina Aduh! [English Subtitles] Ouch! UPSOT Hidayah Tak sabarkan nak keluar? [English Subtitles] You couldn’t wait to get out, could you? UPSOT Dalina Tuan director awak very lucky awak tak ada kat dalam. [English Subtitles] Mr director, you are lucky you were not in there. Jadi kita ikut Jessica sebab dorang nak datang awal. Kalau datang awal kirakan dapat macam… [English Subtitles] Actually the garbage that… I keep looking at the camera. Sorry. My brain is not functioning anymore. Actually the garbage truck is not here yet. We followed Jessica here too early. They wanted to come early to get… UPSOT Hidayah The best… yang terbaik lah. [English Subtitles] The best. UPSOT Dalina Ah pencarian yang terbaik gitu. So kita waktu duduk kat dalam pun dah tak rela dah. Seriously tak rela. Tuan director nak try? Kita dapat informasi dalam beberapa jam tau. [English Subtitles] The best findings. So when we were inside, we were starting to feel unwilling. Would you like to try being inside, Mr director? We got news that the truck is coming in a few hours. UPSOT Hidayah Ya, betul. [English Subtitles] That’s right. UPSOT Dalina So nak kene tunggu lah. Betul-betul sampah dah banyak baru dorang bawak kat sini baru dorang boleh load down. So seriously audience, wish us luck eh. [English Subtitles] So we have to wait. When there’s enough garbage, they will bring it here to unload. Wish us luck, audience. [English Subtitles] As early as 4am, Hidayah and I returned to wait with Jessica’s family for the lorries that will unload trash 52 VO Dalina Sebaik sahaja lori itu selesai menurunkan sampah, Jessica dan keluarganya memulakan perkerjaan mereka dengan mengasingkan sampah mengikut jenis dan bahan. [English Subtitles] As soon as the lorries are done unloading the trash, Jessica and her family commence their jobs by sorting out the trash according to type and material. 53 UPSOT Hidayah Okey dorang dah agih-agihkan… kita cari plastik lah. Ni boleh tak? This one can? [English Subtitles] They have separated the trash. Let’s look for a plastic bag. Can we use this? 54 SOT Dalina Waktu kita tunduk kan…dia punya aroma naik… Ya Allah… [English Subtitles] When we bent down, the stench hits our noses. Teaser UPSOT Hidayah Dalina! UPSOT Dalina Eh Ya Allah! Ada ulat lah!!! Seriously, nanti malam nanti terngigau-ngigau, tak boleh ah. [English Subtitles] Oh my God! There's a worm! Okay, I can't take it anymore. Seriously, I will have nightmares. [English Subtitles] It is as if they pinned hopes on trash that we often disregard. As if the trash is the way towards achieving their dreams. [English Subtitles] While Hidayah and I were still stunned by the visuals and stench, Jessica’s mom found something that can fill their stomach. [English Subtitles] This is Pagpag, a bread. We are eating food from the garbage. SOT Hidayah Bau dia dah macam... dia dah macam… [English Subtitles] This is what they call pagpag. That they eat? SOT Dalina Macam dah nak dekat hampir basi. Roti dia dah macam keras… bau dia dah macam seriously dah nak dekat rosak. [English Subtitles] It smells like it’s going stale. [English Subtitles] This is the first time I set foot in a dumpster. We usually avoid trash but this time, Hidayah and I have to be strong as we have vowed to help Jessica and her family. 58 SOT Dalina Dah nak terburai pun. [English Subtitles] I think it will collapse. Which one eh? Very heavy. SOT Hidayah Berat. [English Subtitles] Heavy. SOT Hidayah Hmm… Bau dia harum kasturi. [English Subtitles] The stench is just unbearable. SOT Dalina Ah ni ni ni… SOT Dalina Okay this one here…Plastic here. Eh itu lipas kan? [English Subtitles] That's a cockroach right? SOT Hidayah I geli lipas…Serious…Serious… I keluar dulu you bilang da pergi boleh? Dalina… Jangan… Jangan… I geli… [English Subtitles] I don't like cockroaches. Serious. I get out first ok. Dalina... Don't. SOT Dalina Okay dah lari…dah lari… [English Subtitles] Okay it's gone. Ate… This one? [English Subtitles] I'm not scared, I'm just nervous. SOT Dalina Eh Ya Allah! Ada ulat lah!! Okay okay I dah tak boleh. I cannot already. I cannot. [English Subtitles] Oh my God! There's a worm! Okay, I can't take it anymore. UPSOT Hidayah Mana? Kat mana? Abeh tinggalkan I sorang-sorang kat sini? [English Subtitles] Where? So you're leaving me alone here? 59 SOT Hidayah Nak balik boleh? Tuan director? [English Subtitles] Can we go home, Mr Director? Tapi cacing, ulat… Ya Allah jangan lah tolong lah… Nak balik… I tak tau macam mana dorang boleh buat kerja gini seriously. Something yang I betul-betul tak biasa. [English Subtitles] Give me cockroaches, snakes, iguanas and I’ll be fine. But earthworms and maggots… No way. I want to go home. I don’t know how they can do this job. It’s something I really am not used to. SOT Hidayah Abeh you imagine eh yang pakcik-pakcik… Bukan pakcik-pakcik lah siapa-siapa yang tukang angkat sampah tu. Mintak maaflah kalau kita selama ni tak hargai awak… Terima kasih kerana buat tempat kita bersih eh… Tak tahu nak appreciate kan. Sekarang I tahu bertapa susahnya kerja ni. [English Subtitles] Can you imagine the uncles or whoever who pick up trash at home? I want to apologize if I never appreciated you before. Thank you for keeping our place clean. I never knew to show appreciation but now I know how difficult this job is. 60 VO Dalina Walaupun dengan menggunakan sarung tangan, kami telah gagal untuk menyelesaikan tugasan. [English Subtitles] Even with the gloves, we failed to complete our tasks. I can’t imagine how they do this everyday. 61 PTC Hidayah Orang-orang ni semua eh betul punya patient eh banyak bersabar because dorang nak bende yang terbaik. First come, first served la orang cakap. Tapi saya pun nak cakap saya mintak maaf banyak-banyak kepada penonton kalau kelakuan saya nampak menghina. Niat saya tak begitu tapi macam mencabar lah. Bau dia lain. Nak tahan bau... Nak tahan suasana lah… Saya tak biasa sangat. Lagi nampak lipas eh bende yang saya geli. Ni kirakan macam fear factor lah untuk saya. And I feel like… Saya minta maaf sangat lah sebab saya tak dapat menolong Jessica dengan mak dia. [English Subtitles] These people are really patient because they want the best. First come first served. But I want to apologize to the audience if my behaviour seemed rude and condescending. It’s not my intention to do so. It’s really challenging. The smell is one thing, the environment is another. I’m really not used to it. Furthermore I saw a cockroach, something that I really fear. This is like fear factor to me. I’m so sorry because I cannot help Jessica and her mom. 62 VO Dalina Bertambah pilu rasa hati kami apabila mendapat tahu bahawa Jessica amat memerlukan kerja ini untuk membiayai kos persekolahannya. [English Subtitles] We were even more heartbroken when we found out she really needs this job to support the cost of schooling 63 SOT Jessica SOMETHING IN TAGALOG [English Subtitles] If I cannot find enough rubbish I cannot go to school. I cannot afford the transport to go to school. [English Subtitles] Because of the constant exposure to toxic, this job can be harmful to one's health. In addition, the trash also contain items that can cause physical harm. 65 SOT Jessica SHOWING HER INJURY [English Subtitles] My fingers got pricked by a stick when I was collecting trash. Kami berkunjung ke rumah Jessica untuk melihat sendiri bagaimana mereka menyediakan makanan [English Subtitles] The entire day, the images of our experience at the dumpster replayed in our minds. Especially the image of food that they collect from among trash that they will eat. We visit Jessica’s house to see for ourselves how they prepare the food. 67 UPSOT Hidayah How long you cook? UPSOT Jenalyn (Tagalog) Two hours. UPSOT Dalina & Hidayah Dua jam. [English Subtitles] Jessica and her mother show us the contents of the plastic bag. [English Subtitles] This is pagpag or food items that have been collected from the trash that will become the main ingredient to their dish. Peha ayam. Yang kat bawah tu saya tak pasti pasal dia nampak macam dah berlumat sangat [English Subtitles] Over here they find processed meat like satay. I thought this was chicken. Chicken wing. At the bottom, I'm not too sure what that is. UPSOT Dalina Which one do you like to eat the most? Which one is your favourite? UPSOT Jessica This UPSOT Dalina What is this? UPSOT Jessica Barbecue UPSOT Dalina Barbecue. Daging barbeku. [English Subtitles] Barbecued meat. [English Subtitles] If the meat is not cooked right, it can cause food poisoning. Jessica’s mom vomited a few times as a result. As she is preparing the food, we managed to chat. [English Subtitles] The information that I find about pagpag is that they can sell it, they can get around 5 to 10 pesos. But it depends on the quality of the meat. But if one day they cannot find any, no pagpag to eat, they have to buy them. And they would have to pay at least 15 pesos. So 15 pesos is about 50 cents in Singapore. 10 pesos is around 30 cens. So the drumstick that you see, it can be sold for 10 pesos. [English Subtitles] Never have I thought that a business could form from the trading of decomposing food. Even though this seems strange to me, I start to understand that their choices are limited to consuming pagpag, rather than face starvation. 74 SOT Dalina Tadi kita teka-teka kan Jessica suka makan apa. You cakap apa? [English Subtitles] We were trying to guess what her favorite food was. SOT Hidayah I ingat dia suka makan burger macam I. Ataupun ikan ke… You cakap…you fikir apa? [English Subtitles] I thought she likes burgers like me. Or fish. What did you think? SOT Dalina I cakap mungkin sayur-sayur ke… apa tu… cup noodle. [English Subtitles] I thought maybe vegetables or cup noodles. SOT Hidayah Cup noodle? Dorang ada jual ke kat sini? [English Subtitles] Cup noodles? Do they even have it here? SOT Dalina Ada… ada jual… ada kedai runcit. [English Subtitles] Yes, they sell it here. There's a shop here. SOT Hidayah Tak sangka eh? Sekali kita dapat tahu dia suka makan apa? [English Subtitles] I didn't think there would be one. Then do you know what she actually likes to eat? SOT Hidayah Telur. [English Subtitles] Eggs. Itulah makanan favourite dia. Di luar dugaan. Jadi sekarang kita nak beli telur kita nak present kat Jessica. [English Subtitles] She likes eggs because she can eat it freshly. That's her favourite. So now, we are going to buy eggs as a gift to her. 75 PTC Dalina Ni kalau dia nampak telur ni mesti dia suka tau. Kita belikan Jessica telur. Satu biji telur ni empat peso. Kita belikan Jessica lima biji telur jadi dua puluh peso. [English Subtitles] If Jessica sees the eggs she would be thrilled. We bought eggs for Jessica. One egg costs 4 Pesos. We bought 5 so 20 Pesos. 76 UPSOT Dalina Jessica! We have a surprise for you. Eggs! You want to fry? Eat with this? 77 VO Dalina Pandai betul Jessica masak telur. Kalau saya masak air memang pakar. Kalau suruh masak telur, saya rasa lebih baik jangan. [English Subtitles] Jessica is so skilled at frying eggs. If you asked me to boil water I am an expert. But if you want me to cook eggs…I think better not. UPSOT Dalina Clever. Yummy. 78 PTC Dalina Kalau kita makan telur tu dah memang dah makanan seharian kita. [English Subtitles] Eating eggs for us is a norm. But for Jessica to eat an egg is difficult because they cannot afford it. They can only eat pagpag that they can find themselves. 79 PTC Hidayah Lepas tengok semua ni kan, saya macam rasa… feel guilty eh… bersalah gitu. Sebab saya punya orang tak suka makan sayur. Saya memilih. Tak makan sayur… banyak lah bende tak makan. Baru semalam makan kebab suruh dorang keluarkan lagi. Dorang da taruh sayur, saya suruh keluarkan. Abeh kalau makan daging nak kene medium rare, rare. Sini kene well done je eh takda pilihan lain. Kita complain makan kat sini tak sedap, makan kat sana tak sedap. Sini dorang… Mak masak… alamak tak suka ah kenapa mak masak lauk ni tak suka. Kenapa ibu masak saya, ibu tau kita tak suka sayur. Walaupun saya nampak cara dorang makan, nampak macam makanan tu tak selera pun tetap dorang telan. [English Subtitles] After seeing these, I feel guilty because I am a fussy eater. Just yesterday I had kebab that was prepared with vegetables but I asked them to take it out. When I have steak, I want it medium rare or rare. But here the choice is only well done. We need to be thankful and not too picky. The people here have no choice. They eat what they get. At home, I think we are often ungrateful. Complain about untasty food, when my mom cooks something I don’t like I complain about it. But here whatever that is served is what they will eat. Even if it’s not appetizing. 80 PTC Dalina Ini sesuatu yang saya rasa kita tak pernah nampak tau. Sebab saya sendiri kalau makan… cerewet sangat. Abeh bila tengok dorang… diorang makan apa saja yang dihidangkan. Jadi saya bilang diri saya macam… kenapa lah Dalina? Kenapa lah kau cerewet sangat? Orang-orang kat sini semua tak cerewet. Semua happy. Kadang-kadang macam frustrated dengan diri sendiri. So that’s why. [English Subtitles] This is something I've never see before. I'm a fussy eater. So when I see them eating what has been served, I ask myself. Why Dalina? Why are you so fussy? People here are not fussy. All are happy. Sometimes I'm frustrated at myself. Teaser UPSOT Dalina Main game? [English Subtitles] Playing games? UPSOT Hidayah Tak lah. I tengah message Bien ni. Tak reply-reply… [English Subtitles] No. I'm texting Bien. He's not replying. Facebook takde, message pun takde... Cemana eh? [English Subtitles] I don't know if we can get them. They don't have Facebook, and no message. How? UPSOT Hidayah Tu lah. Kesian kan? Empat tahun she dorang tak jumpa. [English Subtitles] That's why. So sad. They haven't met in four years. ACT 4 81 UPSOT Hidayah Tak reply-reply... [English Subtitles] He's not replying. Facebook takde, message pun takde... [English Subtitles] I don't know if we can get them. They don't have Facebook, and no message. How? UPSOT Hidayah Eh Bien dah sampai! [English Subtitles] That's why. So sad. They haven't met in four years. UPSOT Dalina Hey Bien! UPSOT Sherbien I have good news. We managed to locate Andrea and then the aunt will be joining her to come for the reunion. They will be travelling for 12 hours. UPSOT Dalina 12 jam? [English Subtitles] 12 hours? UPSOT Hidayah Jauh tu! [English Subtitles] That's far! UPSOT Dalina Ok, ok, ok, then the elder sister? UPSOT Sherbien Elder sister... We're trying to persuade the husband but no promises. We're trying our best. UPSOT Dalina You try your best ok? Thank you... [English Subtitles] Okay so we got to know from Bien, our fixer, that they have contacted Jessica's sister, so I'm quite happy because they finally get to meet and reunite with her siblings. But for her elder sister, we have no confirmation because we need to get permission from her husband so hopefully she could join in. 83 PTC Hidayah Jadi apa yang saya perhatikan, masalah kemiskinan di sini bukan hanya segi makanan, tapi mereka juga tak dapat bersama sebagai keluarga sebab tak mampu – nak ada tambang bas pun macam tak mampu untuk travel lah. Saya rasa kesian sangat. [English Subtitles] We noticed that the problem that poverty brings is not only food, but they also cannot be together as a family as they have no money. No money to take the bus, so they cannot travel. I feel for them. Here, we have our families so we ought to be grateful. 84 VO Dalina Dah terlanjur kita berada di Manila, apa lagi? Shopping lah. Tapi bukan untuk kami. Untuk Jessica. [English Subtitles] Seeing that we are already in Manila, Hidayah and I got the idea to buy gifts for Jessica. [English Subtitles] While shopping, we were told that Andrea will arrive in Manila later that night. Hidayah and I feel so excited to reunite Jessica and her sister once again. 86 UPSOT Hidayah Dalina… I suka yang ni! [English Subtitles] Dalina, I like this. UPSOT Dalina Ah this is nice… At least simple boleh buat macam pakai basahan. [English Subtitles] Ah, this is nice. At least it's simple. UPSOT Hidayah Betul. [English Subtitles] Right. UPSOT Dalina This is nice. Simple. I like. UPSOT Hidayah Cute kan. [English Subtitles] Cute right. 87 VO Dalina Seronok rasanya macam dapat mendandankan anak patung. [English Subtitles] It’s so much fun getting to play dress up with a life-sized doll. 88 UPSOT Dalina Ahhhh cantik. Nice. [English Subtitles] Ah, nice. UPSOT Hidayah Turn around let me see. UPSOT Dalina For your sister. Nice? [English Subtitles] While Andrea is making preparation to travel to Manila from Cayagan, Hidayah and I return to Payatas for another volunteer mission. [English Subtitles] We are here not to fish. Our job is to fix these mosquito nets in the houses here. Mosquito nets are essential to keep these pests out. Even though we have never used these nets before, Hidayah and I successfully placed them in houses in Payatas with the help of the villagers here. Hopefully these nets can prevent residents from getting infected with diseases. 91 UPSOT Dalina Mana seh dorang… Jenalyn Pok, are you excited to meet Andrea? [English Subtitles] Where are they? UPSOT Jenalyn SOMETHING IN TAGALOG ABOUT BEING EXCITED TO MEET HER DAUGHTER UPSOT Dalina Takkan tak excited kan…Saya kat sini macam feel the excitement. Tapi lambat tak sampai sampai. [English Subtitles] Of course she’s excited. Even I can feel the excitement. But where are they? 92 UPSOT Hidayah Nasib baik baju muat. Saya ni menggeletar ni. Rasa gementar eh nak jumpa adik dia. Okay good? Good? Okay let’s go. [English Subtitles] We’re lucky the dress fits. I feel quite nervous for her to meet her sister. 93 UPSOT Hidayah Dalina! UPSOT Dalina Look! Look! [English Subtitles] Even as outsiders who have no blood relations with jessica’s family, we could not control our tears when Jessica, Jenalyn and Andrea got to meet 95 UPSOT Dalina Wah lega seh hati. [English Subtitles] I feel so relieved. UPSOT Hidayah Jangan kacau I! [English Subtitles] Don't disturb me! 96 PTC Dalina Air dicincang tidak akan putus. Tali persaudaraan itu sangat, sangat, sangat kuat. Walupun macam mana mereka dipisahkan, you know bila mereka bergabung tu, kasih sayang tu tetap ada. Love is beautiful. Yes, contohnya. [English Subtitles] Blood is thicker than water. The relationship between them is very, very, very close. No matter how they are separated, when they came together, their love is still there. Love is beautiful. Yes, an example. 97 PTC Dalina Penonton, kita ada satu lagi kejutan. Tunggu ok, tunggu. [English Subtitles] Viewers, we have one more surprise. [English Subtitles] The surprise that I promised is next to me. Your curiosity will soon end. 99 UPSOT Dalina We have a surprise for you! 100 UPSOT Andrea Ate Ronalyn! SOT Ronalyn (Tagalog) [English Subtitles] Yes, I'm happy to finally meet them. SOT Jenalyn (Tagalog) I'm happy, my family is complete again. My only wish is to see my kids after a long time. For four years I haven't seen them. 101 UPSOT Dalina Hello! How’s everybody feeling? UPSOT Jessica Happy UPSOT Dalina Give me 5. Yes. Berjaya. UPSOT Hidayah Sukses UPSOT Dalina Satisfaction. Kepuasan. Saya rasa macam saya nak golek-golek kat rumput… macam nak lompat-lompat. Kan? Tapi tak boleh lah kan. Takut orang terperanjat. [English Subtitles] Satisfaction. I feel like rolling in the grass and jumping. But I can't. I'll scare people. UPSOT Hidayah You golek sorang-sorang. [English Subtitles] You roll around by yourself. UPSOT Dalina Dia tak jiwa. Dia suruh I golek sorang. Tak jiwa eh. [English Subtitles] So rude. [English Subtitles] The atmosphere today is filled with emotions. I feel like it’s Hari Raya. Hidayah and I are happy for them. At the same time, we are also touched to watch them meet. [English Subtitles] We succeeded in reuiniting them after not meeting for a long time. But they will soon return to their separate homes. So that they have a memory of today, we have a camera with us. So if they missed each other, they can look at the pictures taken today. This will be a memory that’s etched in their hearts. 104 VO Dalina Dengan mendalami nasib keluarga Jessica, barulah kami sedar betapa beruntungnya kami. [English Subtitles] By experiencing the fate of Jessica’s family, we now realize how lucky we are. I am now able to appreciate the importance of family ties from a different viewpoint. Sebab kalau mereka dah tak dah kita nak menyesal dah tak guna dah. [English Subtitles] To me, the most memorable experience throughout the journey is when Jessica’s family got to reunite after a long time. They are separated because of poverty. So it all boils down to money. We have everything we need in Singapore. So to me, it is important for us to value our family while they are still around. Once they are gone, it’s no use to regret. [English Subtitles] From our experience in Payatas, Hidayah and I got to do some soul-searching. It really opened our eyes and mind. Nampak baju beli. Lawa je beli. Tapi takda kesempatan nak pakai. Macam makan pun sama. Oh lapar lah makan… nanti pilih ni ni ni. Tapi tak habis kan membazir tu. Dan yang penting lagi, ikatan keluarga. Kalau saya, saya suka gaduh dengan adik saya, dengan abang saya, suka bertekak dengan mak. Selalu merajuk dengan mak, bapak. Tak boleh simpan dendam lah. Ambil yang…apa? Buang yang keruh ambil yang jernih orang kata. [English Subtitles] From my experience, I begin to understand the meaning of struggle. I learned that what you want is not the same as what you need. I have a habit of wasting and greed. When I see nice clothes I would buy them even if there are no opportunities to wear them. The same goes with eating. I would order a lot but not finish it. What a waste. More importantly, family ties. I like to fight with my siblings, get upset with my parents. But it’s no good to keep a grudge. Let bygones be bygones.
