Boat People explores the plight of the Rohingya people who have been fleeing Myanmar over the past few years. It reveals how a transnational human trafficking syndicate has been profiting through a dark web involving kidnapping, extortion, rape and murder. The programme follows the trail used by the syndicate to smuggle them from Myanmar, through Thailand and finally to Malaysia. Through interviews with law enforcement officials, journalists and victims, Boat People reveals how the syndicate operates and the tactics they used to evade capture for so many years. Survivors recount their hellish journey and the torture that they experienced at the hands of their captors. Their story begins with the exodus from Myanmar and ends with their arrival in Malaysia. The producers explore the challenges that they face in their desperate search for a brighter future. Will these traffickers actually help them get to Malaysia? Is Malaysia truly the Promised Land? The programme reveals the response by the authorities as they hunt for the perpetrators to bring them to justice.
