Georgette Chen (1906 – 1993) was talented, sophisticated and worldly. She scaled the upper reaches of achievement in art, and was a legendary female artist ahead of her time. The Worlds of Georgette Chen is the first mega docudrama series on a pioneer Singapore artist whose extraordinary life spanned three continents and four major cities – Shanghai, Paris, New York and Singapore. The team travelled to China and Paris to unearth precious documents and photographs, and to meet her family members. MediaCorp’s top actress Rui En, who played Georgette, movingly portrayed the dramatic twists and turns of the artist’s life in this cinematically beautiful epic story. Episode 1 – Love in Autumn The debut episode, Love in Autumn, tells the compelling love story of the artist who first made a name in Paris in the 1930s. She was enthralled by the world’s art capital where she built her foundation and had her first rare breakthrough as an Asian female artist. This city was also the place she fell in love with political fugitive and China’s first foreign minister, Eugene Chen. Their union changed her destiny. This exciting episode was filmed in Paris, China and Singapore. Viewers will discover the early years of the artist whose portraits of her first husband and herself are painterly windows to her cinematic life. Episode 2 – Dark Passage in Winter After her marriage to prominent Chinese politician Eugene Chen, Georgette journeyed through the winter years of her life. Politics and war decided her fate while she held on to her singular passion – painting. She continued to produce an impressive oeuvre of still life, portrait and landscape paintings during the most tumultuous and nomadic years of her life. This episode unravels Georgette’s emotional journey, one that is filled with great love and deep anguish as she pined for her blissful first union and severed her cursed second marriage. Episode 3 – Deathless Days in Summer In this final episode, the artist made Singapore her home and became a citizen. In this land of perpetual summer, the prolific painter perfected her technique, taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and bravely battled her crippling congenital illness. Her students and friends recount her inspiring life, while collectors and curators esteem her exquisite legacy – a captivating collection of still life, portrait and landscape paintings.
